Pentagon MMA Members Raise $7,500 for Arlington Free Clinic

Diana Nakarmi

Pentagon MMA members raised more than $7,500 for the Arlington Free Clinic this fall through a Train-A-Thon.

Through the Sept. 30 event and fundraiser, 27 Pentagon MMA fighters and dozens of community members helped Arlington women who, in addition to experiencing economic hardship, are struggling with a breast cancer diagnosis.

Funds raised through PMMA’s Train-A-Thon will help ease the financial burden of a breast cancer diagnosis by allowing AFC to provide transportation to and from chemotherapy and radiation appointments, assist with covering childcare expenses during treatment, and provide mastectomy bras which help to restore confidence — an important part of the recovery process.

The Pentagon MMA event included both a Kick-A-Thon and a Grapplethon. Sixteen adults and six children participated in the Kick-a-Thon, raising funds through participant for an amount per kick or a flat donation. The children had 15 minutes to kick, and adults had 30 minutes to kick. Five Grapplethon participants had rounds lasting 3 minutes each continuing for 2 hours, and people were invited to sponsor a participant for an amount per sparring round or a flat donation.

In addition, Lularoe Steph & Mike attended with Lularoe inventory to help raise funds, and Tortas Y Tacos La Chiquita Mexicana provided tacos and quesadillas for participants and supporting community members.

Warrior Kids Featured in Associated Press and National News

Kru Vivek and our Warrior Kids were featured on the AP News, USA Today, and several other news outlets! We are so proud of our kids and how far they have come, and now they get to see themselves on national news. Check it out! The story focuses on concerns surrounding brain injury and kids' mixed martial arts training. While we feel the title of the story is misplaced, as our kids' program is geared towards mma for self-defense, not ultimate fighting, it is exciting to see our kids' program, which does not allow hits to the head, getting national attention. Please help us spread the word on the mental and physical benefits of safe, controlled, and structured mixed martial arts training for kids!

Shoulder Injury Seminar

Thank you Dr. Ujjwal Shakya for the incredibly informative and practical shoulder injury seminar you presented yesterday! Shoulder injuries are pervasive in our sport; whether you train for fitness or competition, knowledge in this area is critical to success in training. Dr. Shakya's seminar covered common types of shoulder injuries, self treatment and techniques, posture education, how it applies to MMA (grappling and punching), and specific therapeutic exercises & videos of exercises. All proceeds were donated to Save One Life, a non-profit organization dedicated to offering opportunities to sponsor individuals with bleeding disorders in developing countries. Dr. Shakya has been involved with this organization since 2003 and sponsors two children with hemophilia. The seminar raised almost $200 for Save One Life! Please check out Dr. Shakya's blog for some of the videos he used in the seminar: REHAB MMA. He will be presenting more seminars in the future, so stay tuned!
